What Does This Character Counter Do?
This tool shows the character count (with and without spaces), word, sentence and line counts of your text as you type. It is handy anywhere a character limit applies: social media posts, SMS messages, essays, SEO meta descriptions and application forms.
Common limits: an X (Twitter) post is 280 characters, an Instagram caption 2,200, a standard SMS 160, a Google result title about 60 and a meta description about 160 characters. Your text is never sent to a server — counting happens entirely in your browser.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are spaces included in the character count?
The tool shows both values: the total character count including spaces and line breaks, and the count without spaces. Most platforms (such as X/Twitter) count spaces toward the limit.
How many characters is one SMS?
A standard SMS is 160 characters using the basic GSM alphabet. If your message contains characters outside it (many accented or non-Latin characters), encoding switches to Unicode and the limit drops to 70 per message.
How is the word count calculated?
The text is split on whitespace; consecutive spaces and line breaks count as a single separator. This matches how Word and Google Docs count words.
