How Print Size Is Calculated

Print size in inches is simply pixel dimension ÷ DPI (dots per inch), applied separately to width and height. DPI describes how densely a printer packs dots of ink into each inch of paper — at a fixed pixel count, a higher DPI produces a smaller and sharper physical print, while a lower DPI produces a larger but potentially softer print.

Different DPI tiers suit different uses: 300 DPI for gallery-quality prints viewed up close, roughly 200 DPI for good home prints viewed at normal reading distance, and 150 DPI or lower for large posters and canvas prints meant to be seen from several feet away.

Example: a photo measuring 3000 × 2000 pixels, printed at the professional-standard 300 DPI, comes out at 3000 ÷ 300 = 10 inches wide by 2000 ÷ 300 ≈ 6.67 inches tall — a clean 10×6.67 inch print. Drop to 150 DPI and the same file prints at 20×13.3 inches — twice as large in each dimension, because half the DPI means each pixel is stretched across twice the paper area.

What You Should Know

  • 300 DPI is the accepted standard for professional photo prints viewed up close, such as magazines, portraits and gallery prints, because at typical viewing distance the human eye cannot resolve individual dots at that density.
  • Lower DPI is not automatically worse — large posters, canvas prints and billboards are viewed from a distance, so 150 or even 100 DPI looks perfectly sharp because the viewing distance itself blurs dot visibility.
  • The real trade-off is size versus sharpness at a fixed pixel count: the same file printed at a lower DPI yields a physically larger print, but with less ink-dot density per inch, so fine detail and text can look softer or slightly pixelated up close.
  • To print larger at full 300 DPI quality, more pixels are needed to begin with — either shoot at higher resolution or upscale the image, keeping in mind that upscaling adds interpolated, not real, detail.

Can I print a 12 MP phone photo as a poster?

Yes — 4000×3000 px gives 33×25 cm at 300 DPI, but a 68×50 cm poster at 150 DPI still looks great from normal viewing distance. Viewing distance matters more than DPI dogma.

What DPI do photo labs actually need?

Most labs are happy at 240-300 DPI; canvas and posters are commonly printed at 150. Sending more DPI than the printer resolves gains nothing.

How many megapixels do I need for a specific print size?

Multiply the target width and height in inches by the chosen DPI to get the required pixel dimensions, then multiply those two pixel counts and divide by 1,000,000 for megapixels. A 300 DPI 8×10 inch print needs 2400×3000 pixels, or 7.2 MP. A 300 DPI 16×20 inch print needs 4800×6000 pixels, or 28.8 MP.

What happens if I print above the native resolution of the photo?

The printer or software has to invent pixels that were never captured, a process called upscaling or interpolation. It can smooth over minor size gaps reasonably well, but pushing far past native resolution produces visible softness or artifacts rather than genuine detail — there is no substitute for starting with enough real pixels.

Does the aspect ratio affect the print size?

Yes — the calculator preserves the original width-to-height ratio of the photo, so results always come out proportional. Fitting a photo onto a non-matching print ratio, such as a 3:2 camera photo onto 8×10 inch 4:5 paper, requires some cropping.
