The Kirby-Desai Scale
Published in 2009 and used in laser clinics worldwide, the Kirby-Desai scale scores six factors — Fitzpatrick skin type, body location, ink density, layering (cover-ups), scarring and ink colors — and the total approximates the number of Q-switched laser sessions needed. Darker skin, distal locations (hands, feet), dense professional ink, cover-ups and stubborn colors (green, light blue, yellow) all add sessions. Treatments are spaced 6-8 weeks apart, so the tool also projects the total timeline in months.
This is a screening estimate, not a promise: laser type (including newer picosecond systems), clinic technique and your immune response shift real-world results. A dermatologist's in-person assessment is the only reliable quote.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which ink colors are hardest to remove?
Black absorbs all laser wavelengths and clears best. Green, light blue and yellow reflect much of the light and are the most stubborn — often needing specific wavelengths and extra sessions.
Why do sessions need 6-8 weeks between them?
The laser only shatters the ink; your lymphatic system clears the fragments over the following weeks. Rushing sessions adds skin damage without faster clearing.
Will the tattoo disappear completely?
Many do fade to near-invisible, but complete clearance is never guaranteed — some pigments and skin responses leave a ghost. Cover-ups after partial removal are a common practical path.
