What Is Volumetric Weight?
Carriers do not simply charge by scale weight — they charge for whichever is greater: the parcel's actual (scale) weight or its volumetric (dimensional) weight, calculated as width × length × height (all in cm) ÷ a divisor set by the carrier. Common divisors: 3000 (many domestic couriers, e.g. "desi" pricing in Türkiye), 5000 (international express — DHL, UPS, FedEx), and 6000 (many air-freight tariffs). The logic: a truck, van or cargo plane has finite volume as well as finite weight capacity, so bulky-but-light parcels are billed as if they weighed as much as the space they occupy.
Worked example: a 40 × 40 × 30 cm box (large enough for a pillow or a stuffed toy) with a domestic divisor of 3000: volumetric weight = (40 × 40 × 30) ÷ 3000 = 48,000 ÷ 3000 = 16 kg. If the actual box on the scale weighs only 3 kg, the carrier still bills 16 kg — more than five times the real weight — because volume, not mass, is the limiting factor for that shipment.
