How It's Calculated
Brick counting starts from the same principle as tiling: each unit occupies its face size plus the mortar joint around it, not just its own dimensions. With a standard 3/8 in (10 mm) mortar joint, a modular brick — nominally 7-5/8 × 2-1/4 in — actually occupies 8 × 2.625 in once laid with mortar on all sides. Dividing one square foot (144 in²) by that laid footprint (21 in²) gives roughly 6.9 bricks per square foot, the working constant this tool multiplies against wall area.
The wall area itself must have door and window openings subtracted first — skipping this step is the single most common estimating mistake, since it inflates the material total by exactly the area of every opening, which on a typical wall with a door and a couple of windows can mean ordering hundreds of bricks that are never laid. After net area is multiplied by bricks-per-square-foot, add a waste allowance of 5-10% for cuts at corners, breakage in handling, and pieces that come out of the truck cracked.
Worked example: an 8 ft tall, 20 ft long wall (160 ft² gross) with one standard door opening of roughly 21 ft². Net area = 160 - 21 = 139 ft². Bricks needed = 139 × 6.9 ≈ 959, and adding a 10% waste allowance brings the order to roughly 1,050 modular bricks. Skipping the door subtraction would have inflated that order by about 145 bricks for an opening that will never hold a single one.
Wall thickness changes the multiplier directly: this math covers one layer, or wythe, of brick. A single-wythe veneer wall needs exactly the count above; a solid double-wythe wall (two layers of brick with a cavity or full bond between them) needs close to double the brick count, since it is really two separate walls of masonry built back to back. Concrete block (CMU) scales the same way but with different unit geometry — an 8×8×16 in block occupies 0.89 ft² of wall face, giving about 1.125 blocks per ft², a far lower count than brick because each unit is so much larger.
