Counting Bricks Like a Mason

Each unit occupies its face size plus the mortar joint (3/8 in / 10 mm standard): a modular brick (7-5/8 × 2-1/4 in) covers 8 × 2.625 in laid, giving ~6.9 bricks per ft². Multiply wall area (minus doors and windows) and add 5-10% for cuts and breakage. An 8×20 ft wall with one door thus wants ~1,050 modular bricks.

Blocks change the math the same way: an 8×8×16 in CMU covers 0.89 ft² → 1.125 per ft². Mortar consumption runs ~7 bags of masonry cement per 1,000 bricks. Structural walls are engineering territory — this tool estimates quantities, not load capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Single or double wythe — does the count double?

Yes: this tool counts one layer (wythe). A double-wythe solid wall or a brick veneer over block are two separate calculations.

How much waste should I plan?

5% for straight runs by an experienced hand, 10% for corners, openings and first-timers. Bricks from a different production batch may differ in shade — buy the surplus with the main order.
