How the Weight Is Estimated
Without a scale, live weight can be estimated from two tape measurements using the Schaeffer formula: weight (kg) = heart girth (cm)² × body length (cm) ÷ 10,838. Heart girth is measured in a full loop just behind the front legs and shoulder blades, where the chest is largest. Body length runs from the point of the shoulder (front of the leg) to the pin bone at the base of the tail, following the body's contour rather than a straight line through the air.
Worked example: an animal with a 180 cm girth and 160 cm body length gives 180² × 160 ÷ 10,838 = 32,400 × 160 ÷ 10,838 ≈ 478 kg. A slightly larger animal — 190 cm girth, 165 cm length — comes out to 190² × 165 ÷ 10,838 = 36,100 × 165 ÷ 10,838 ≈ 549 kg: a 10 cm girth difference alone shifts the estimate by roughly 70 kg, since girth is squared in the formula and dominates the result.
What to Know
This is an estimate, not a substitute for a scale. Typical accuracy is ±5-10% on a calm, squarely-standing animal — a 500 kg true weight could read anywhere from about 450 to 550 kg. Several factors push the estimate off:
- Gut fill — a full rumen after grazing or feeding can add 15-20 kg of apparent weight that is not muscle or frame; measure in the morning before feeding for the most consistent readings.
- Body condition and fat cover — an over-conditioned (fat) animal reads heavier for its frame than a lean one of the same skeletal size.
- Pregnancy — a late-term pregnant cow's girth measurement includes the calf and uterine fluid, inflating the estimate.
- Breed and frame differences — the formula was derived from common beef/dairy cattle types; very different frame sizes (miniature or exotic breeds) fit the curve less well.
The tape method suits medicine dosing (where a ±10% margin is normally acceptable), rough sale negotiations and herd management tracking. For official trade, veterinary dosing at a tight margin, or research, a calibrated livestock scale remains the reference standard. To get the most repeatable number by hand, take both measurements twice, average each, and always use the same tape tension — a tape pulled snug one day and loose the next can shift the girth reading by several centimeters, which the formula then squares into a much larger swing in the final estimate.
