Why Your iPhone Photos Will Not Open

Since iOS 11, iPhones shoot in HEIC (HEIF container with HEVC compression) — files half the size of JPG at the same quality. The catch: Windows, older Android, many web forms and most printing kiosks still expect JPG. This tool decodes HEIC entirely in your browser (a WebAssembly build of the open-source libheif) and re-encodes to JPG — photos never leave your device.

Prevention tip: on iPhone, Settings → Camera → Formats → "Most Compatible" shoots JPG directly; or when sharing, AirDrop/Mail often auto-convert. For the HEICs you already have, this converter is the fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does conversion lose quality?

A re-encode at 90% quality is visually indistinguishable for photos. Some metadata (EXIF location, depth maps, Live Photo motion) is not carried over to the JPG.

Why does the first conversion take a moment?

The decoder (~1.3 MB WebAssembly) loads on first use, then converting is fast. It is served from this site, not a third-party CDN.

My file will not convert — why?

Some burst/portrait HEICs contain multiple images or unusual encodings the browser decoder cannot handle; the tool reports these. Exporting from Photos as JPG is the fallback.
