Seed by Rate and Area

Total seed = rate (kg/da) × area. Typical drilled rates: wheat 18-22 kg/da, barley 16-20, oats 12-16, chickpea 10-14, lentil 8-12, alfalfa 2.5-4, vetch 8-12; row crops go by seed count instead (maize ~1.8-2.5 kg/da, sunflower ~0.4-0.6 at typical spacings). Pick a crop to preload its mid-range rate, then adjust for your conditions.

Rates climb toward the upper end with late sowing, coarse or dry seedbeds, broadcast (not drilled) seeding, and low-germination lots — certified seed states germination on the tag; divide the rate by (germination ÷ 100) to compensate a weak lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my regional recommendation different?

Rates are climate-, variety- and method-specific. The built-in ranges are common midpoints for drilled sowing; your extension service or seed supplier's figure for the variety wins.

How do I adjust for germination percentage?

Divide by germination: a 20 kg/da target with 85% germination becomes 20 ÷ 0.85 ≈ 23.5 kg/da. The tool's rate field accepts the adjusted number.
