Counting Rolls Like a Decorator
Wallpaper is hung in vertical strips: strips needed = total wall width ÷ roll width; strips per roll = roll length ÷ strip length. A strip is the wall height plus ~10 cm trim allowance — and with a pattern repeat, each strip must start at the same point of the motif, so strip length rounds up to a whole number of repeats. A 10 m wall at 2.5 m height with standard 53 cm × 10.05 m rolls: 19 strips, 3 per roll → 7 rolls; a 64 cm repeat pushes that to 10.
Decorators usually do NOT subtract doors and windows — the offcuts rarely fit elsewhere and you want spare from the same batch (dye lots differ visibly). Order all rolls at once and check the batch number on each label.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do "straight match" and "offset match" mean?
Straight match repeats at the same height on every strip; offset (drop) match shifts half a repeat sideways, wasting a bit more. For offset patterns, enter the full repeat — the calculation stays safe.
Should I really not subtract windows?
For normal rooms, no — the safety margin covers mistakes and future repairs from the same batch. Only for a dominant opening (a full glass wall) subtract its strips manually.
