What the Moon Sign Is

Your Moon sign is whichever of the 12 zodiac signs the Moon occupied, ecliptically, at the exact moment you were born. Unlike the Sun — which takes about a month to cross a single sign — the Moon races through the zodiac at roughly 13° per day, completing a full 360° circuit in about 27.3 days and changing sign every 2 to 2.5 days. That speed is exactly why calculating a Moon sign is far more sensitive to birth time, not just birth date, than a Sun sign calculation ever is: get the date right but the time wrong by a few hours, and if the birth fell near a sign boundary, the result can flip entirely.

How it's computed: the tool applies a truncated form of Jean Meeus's lunar position algorithm — the same family of astronomical ephemeris formulas used in professional astronomy software — to find the Moon's true ecliptic longitude at the exact birth date, time and location, accurate to a small fraction of a degree. That longitude is then mapped onto whichever 30°-wide zodiac sign it falls in.

This calculator uses the tropical zodiac (anchored to the seasons and the March equinox), the system used by most Western astrology — not the sidereal zodiac used in Vedic/Jyotish astrology, which is offset by roughly 24° due to the slow precession of the equinoxes. The two systems can place the exact same birth moment in different signs.

What to Know

• Time precision matters more than date precision here. Since the Moon moves only about 0.5° per hour, a 1-2 hour uncertainty in birth time rarely changes the result — unless the birth landed within a few hours of an actual sign change.
• Sun sign and Moon sign play different roles in the tradition. The Sun sign is read as core identity and ego; the Moon sign is read as the inner, emotional and instinctive self — the two are meant to complement, not duplicate, one another.
• If the exact birth time is unknown, try noon first; if a boundary change is suspected, testing 00:00 and 23:59 shows whether the sign could actually have changed on that day.
• This is a cultural and personal-interpretation tool, not a scientific one. The astronomical position calculation is real and precise; the personality meanings attached to zodiac signs have no basis in empirical science. Treat any result as entertainment and self-reflection, never as fact.
