How GPA Is Calculated

Each letter grade carries grade points on the 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 … F = 0.0). Your GPA is the credit-weighted average: GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours). A 3-credit A (12.0 points) affects your GPA three times as much as a 1-credit A. Add your courses below; the semester GPA updates as you type, and you can fold in your existing cumulative GPA to see the combined result.

Reference points: 3.5+ is typically dean's list territory, 3.0 is a common threshold for internships and grad school, and 2.0 is the usual minimum for good academic standing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What GPA do I need to raise my cumulative to 3.0?

It depends how many credits you already have — past credits anchor the average. Enter your current cumulative GPA and completed credits below, then experiment with this semester's grades to see the combined GPA move.

Do A+ grades count as more than 4.0?

At most U.S. schools A+ = 4.0, same as A. Some institutions award 4.3 — check your registrar; this tool uses the common 4.0 cap.

Are pass/fail courses included in GPA?

Usually not — a P earns credits but no grade points, so it neither helps nor hurts GPA. An F in a pass/fail course, however, often does count at many schools.
