What do I need on the final?
How Is a Weighted Course Grade Calculated?
Most courses weight the final exam more than the midterm — commonly 40% midterm and 60% final. The average is: midterm × 0.40 + final × 0.60. A 50 midterm and 70 final gives 20 + 42 = 62. Adjust the weights to match your syllabus.
The second calculator answers the exam-week question: "what do I need on the final?" Required final = (target − midterm × midterm weight) ÷ final weight. If it exceeds 100, the target is mathematically out of reach.
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I need on the final to pass with 60?
With 40/60 weights and a 50 midterm: (60 − 50×0.4) ÷ 0.6 = 66.7. Enter your own numbers in the second calculator for an instant answer.
My course uses different weights — can I change them?
Yes, both weight fields are editable. Enter e.g. 30 and 70; they should sum to 100.
What if the required final score is above 100?
The target average is unreachable with exams alone — check whether homework, projects or make-up exams can add points.
