Lorem ipsum is not made-up nonsense — it is a scrambled, mangled excerpt from a real Latin text: Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written around 45 BCE. Somewhere in the 1500s, an unknown typesetter grabbed a passage from that work to use as filler text while laying out a specimen book, and in doing so cut, rearranged and altered the words enough that the result no longer reads as real Latin.
