How the Wake-Up Times Are Calculated

So a 7:00 AM wake-up, counting back six full cycles (9 hours) plus 15 minutes of latency, suggests lights-out at approximately 9:45 PM the night before.
Worked example: you need to wake at 6:30 AM. Five cycles back is 7.5 hours of sleep, landing bedtime at 10:45 PM (6:30 AM minus 7h30m minus 15 minutes latency). What the Calculator Cannot Tell You
Cycle length is an average, not a constant: it varies by roughly ±10 minutes from person to person and shifts slightly across the night — early cycles lean more toward deep sleep, later cycles lean more toward REM. If the suggested times consistently feel off, that ±10 minutes is probably why; nudge your bedtime in 15-minute steps over a week and keep whatever leaves you feeling clearest.
Alignment optimizes how you feel at the alarm, not whether you slept enough. Six aligned hours are not superior to eight unaligned hours — total sleep debt accumulates regardless of when you wake within a cycle, and chronic short sleep carries real health costs that no amount of cycle-timing can offset.
